What is really meant by No Clean? "No-Clean" solder paste is a misnomer. There is no such thing as a "No-Clean" solder paste, only a low residue solder paste, whose flux residue after reflow, may not have to be cleaned from the board, to ensure board functional reliability. No clean refers to a production process in which cleaning of the final product is deemed unnecessary. Therefore the process does not containing a cleaning step in the production line. White residues are the bane of the electronics industry. There are dozens of different possible sources -- the boards, the solvent and fluxes, the people, the processes, the way the fluxes and solder paste are stored, and even the weather. It is very hard to determine precisely what might be causing the problem. Since the industry switched primarily to lead-free soldering materials, problems with white residues have skyrocketed. These materials use different ingredients, operate at higher temperatures and respond to solvents differently than the older products. I suspect that your situation is in this category. The residues themselves usually (but not always) are salts, which are the "activators" in the fluxes. When these salts meet heat or other chemicals, white residues can result. These residues can corrode delicate circuits and, even more urgently, greatly facilitate dendrite growth. For additional thoughts on this, email sales@aqueoustech.com and ask them for a reprint of a very good article in SMT Magazine about PCB cleaning, "Defluxing Deja vu" by By Michael Konrad, of Aqueous Technologies Corporation. But lead-free isn't the only source of residues. For example, if somebody uses the wrong flux, or a solder paste that has not been properly stored or is past its expiration date, white residues can result. If cleaning is not performed properly, white residues can result. Even improperly cured substrates can manifest white residues after reflow. So determining the true root cause can be tricky. But an educated guess would suggest yes, most likely the white residues are corrosive AND they will inhibit the binding of the conformal coating with the surface of the board. The white rsidue is typically not Halites. I'm not a chemist but we believe the white to be a type of oxide formed during the soldering process. No Clean fluxes should probably be named, "Don't Clean" flux, as there can be actives trapped below the exterior portion of this material. Mild RMA that is not exposed, will most likely not effect majority of class 2 assemblies. We don't recommend Conformal coating over NC fluxes, due to the potential and adhesion issues that can occur, more importantly. If you do need to coat these, we generally use a water soluable flux, wash them and bake prior to coating them in high reliability applications. The volitales used in many coatings can cause NC shell to break down as well, so it's important to know full compatibility of the chemical systems involved and the ambient environment of the assemby as well. If cleaning is deemed necessary, we have cleaned NC fluxes with Mutiphase chemicals with good success. Important note, is that when cleaning or even running NC flux that you monitor activity on the PCB, to ensure you dont have exposed ionic activity, and decrease the life of the assembly. We do this with indicator solution to monitor pH across areas where more concnetration of flux exists.

There are different classes of no clean flux. Ones that are a low solids containing no rosin and ones that have a higher solids content that do contain rosin. Based on the residue that you see, it sounds as if you are using the low solids type flux. In these fluxes most solder companies use organic acids to activate the solder but at the soldering temperature these acids vaporize leaving very little residue. Some fluxes in the market today utilize activators that don't clean off completely which is probably what you are experiencing. These residues usually are white as you describe and are non corrosive and non conductive. As to conformal coating I would check with your supplier to see if they indeed can be coated over this residue.

Just to be clear, no-clean does not mean that it does not have to be cleaned. It simply means that it leaves behind less residue than higher solids content fluxes. The residue is most likely lightly corrosive. The white residue is most likely unencapsulated metal salts. Conformal coating over the top of the residue is not recommend. The potential for electro-migration is increased when flux (no-clean or otherwise) is allowed to stay on the assembly. It only takes three key ingredients to grow dendrites (metal crystals) on a board. These three ingredients are voltage, conductive / corrosive material (flux) and moisture (humidity). The flux residue forms a conductive path connecting an anode to a cathode. The results are either electrical leakage (a temporary problem) or dendrite growth (a permanent problem). Use of lead-free alloys have increased visible residues on circuit assemblies. The increased heat associated with lead-free alloys causes the no-clean flux to polymerize before it has a chance to fully encapsulate the newly created oxidized material created during the reflow process. Increasingly, assemblers are removing no-clean flux residues as part of their normal assembly process. I would recommend the same for you.

Try applying a small amount of flux to the TOP of a bare PCB and processthis through the wave - if no residue is present then your process is set upcorrectly and you have the correct preheat settings.Secondly pass the populated PCB with residue on through aglue profile so around 130-150C for 90 seconds IF this comes out clean then itwas probably over fluxing or wrong preheat settings used.If the board still comes out white then wash in IPA IFthis doesn't remove the white powder then you have Mineral salts(Talcum Powder)from undercured solder resist left on your PCB. If this is left on when coatingthe undercured resist will cause the coating to not wet correclty and give anorange peel effect.Hope this helps.

React.js has gained a lot of attention since it was open sourced by Facebook last year, and with its recent version 0.12 release, it appears that a version 1.0 may soon be on the horizon. React is a lightweight front end toolkit for handling the view layer of web applications that emphasizes a unidirectional data flow to simplify logic about state and data binding. Under the hood, React utilizes a virtual DOM, diffing this with the plain old DOM (PODOM) and rerendering the page with the minimal effort necessary to reflect the updated state of the application. This is an interesting abstraction that makes it easier to reason about state in an application and relieves the need for developers to directly manipulate the DOM.

This year, Facebook introduced Flux, the application architecture they use for React apps. Flux is more of a pattern for separating concerns and organizing files in large React applications than it is a full-blown front end framework like Angular or Ember. Flux provides a roadmap for ensuring the unidirectional flow of data in apps and allows for more modular processing of state changes, event handling, and interfacing with external services.

I think React in particular is relatively easy and intuitive to understand. It provides a sparse API that makes it quick to set up a few components, attach some event listeners to the DOM, and get an app up and running. JSX, a language that serves up a sugary mix of HTML and interpolated JavaScript (it compiles to JavaScript), is a bit odd at first. It’s quite easy to get used to though, and remarkably it totally relieves you from the need to do string concatenation, which is a big plus.

Flux, on the other hand, takes a bit more time to fully grok. The conceit is simple: all data flows in one direction. But as I had previously primarily developed apps using the MVC architecture, Flux was a bit of a tough nut to crack.

In this blog post, I hope to make it clear how to get started using Flux in a React application.

Conceptual Model

Before I get into building the example app, it’s important to take a moment to think about the big picture of Flux. Luckily, there is one phenomenal chart that shows how all of the pieces work together:

  • Stores
  • Controller-View
  • Views

Keep in mind, this is all on the front end. React and Flux were explicitly intended to be back end agnostic. Plug in your favorite database and back end framework at will, should the need arise.


Let’s say we want to build a small app that keeps track of the speed of Doc Brown’s DeLorean from Back to the Future, and lets users know if the flux capacitor has been activated yet – the deciding factor of whether or not time travel is possible at their current speed. Feel free to follow along with the project repo on github.

Each of the key parts mentioned above gets their own folder in the file directory structure. A barebones Flux and React app (i.e. exclusively HTML, CSS, and JS files) should look something like this:

I’ll use NPM for a package manager here. It is also easy to drop in a link to Facebook’s CDN or download React. Be aware that this does not include Flux, and with larger applications it makes sense to use a package manager where we can pull in several dependencies.

For now we’ll use just one CSS file, . However, if the app gets big enough we might want to make the CSS more modular. One way we could do this is by using individual CSS files for each React component, (e.g. , , etc.).

Writing the App… The Flux Way

Although the actions are at the top of the foodchain, it helps to conceptualize the flow of a Flux app starting from the View layer.

At the top level of the View layer we have the “Controller-View”. For our purposes, this will be the DeLorean component that will wrap the entire application. The Controller-View is responsible for registering event listeners with the Stores, retrieving state from the Stores when the Stores emit an event, rerending the application with this new state using , and passing the state down to nested components through props.

Say that the Accelerator component contains a element. Unable to resist the temptation, a user clicks the button. This triggers the event handler we have embedded in this button, which calls the method defined on the Accelerator component.

This method sends a message to an Action Creator. Action Creators supply an API of accepted methods that can be invoked by components, and are also the place where information can break out of the Flux loop and communicate via XHR with the back end, external APIs, a database, etc. In the case of this app, it would be a bit contrived to ping an API or a back end, so I will keep the DeLoreanActionCreators file super simple and handle the logic in the DeLoreanStore.

Action Creators can pass on any updated state they receive from the components to the Dispatcher along with a set action type. Typicially the name of the invoked method on the Action Creator mirrors the name of the action type. Action types are listed in the constants folder.

This set of SCREAMING_CAMEL_CASE constants serves as the one definitive source of what actions are legal in the Flux application. Don’t overthink this – the sole purpose of the constants folder is for looking up constants. If the app gets large enough, you can get more modular in how you classify the constants, but at the end of the day all you want to know is what exactly are the officially sanctioned actions in this app.

Next, the AppDispatcher receives the message along with the data above, which is referred to as the method argument below. The AppDispatcher is a singleton in the Flux app and has two main functions: forwarding the data it receives from the actions to all stores, and keeping track of the callbacks registered by stores.

The AppDispatcher typically responds to messages sent from the Action Creators by calling the method on itself.

Dead simple. I think the choice of wording here was good, as it’s just like an emergency dispatcher that broadcasts messages to EMTs in the field and keeps track of who’s on duty.

Creating Dispatchers used to require a lot of boilerplate code, but a canonical Dispatcher has recently been packaged up as part of the Flux NPM module. Check out the Dispatcher’s seriously simple builtin API in the offical documentation to see what goes on under the hood here.

In a front end app, Stores are responsible for the logic that we typically associate with a model on the back end. Stores inherit from the prototype of node’s EventEmitter, and are responsible for consuming the data passed down from the dispatcher, changing its state internally, and emitting an event which forces the whole app to update its state.

As I mentioned above, Stores also are required to register their callbacks with the AppDispatcher. The callback takes a payload as its argument, and then uses a statement to determine what actions to take based on the action type listed in the payload. (This action type is the same constant originally defined by the DeLoreanActionCreators way back when.)

Stores are the one place in a Flux application where state is officially defined. In a simple case, this may just be a running tally of how many times a button was clicked. Based on the action type, the Store’s public methods will utilize private methods to update its privately held data. Finally, it emits a ‘change’ event, and it’s work is done.

Now we’re back in React’s View layer, but not so fast – the state of our application has changed! When the DeLorean component (our Controller-View) receives the new state from the DeLoreanStore, it calls its method. This automatically triggers its method, which in turn triggers the methods of all of its nested components, and it’s turtles all the way down.

All components in the app now have access to the data in its current state, and await further instructions.

Closing Thoughts

It took me a couple weeks, but I finally feel like I’m understanding Flux, and I really like it! It provides a different way of reasoning about state and data flow in JavaScript applications. React is super straightforward, and as it approaches version 1.0, it is doing what it can to make its API even MORE simple as well as compliant with new ES6 (and even ES7!) features. I’m looking forward to delving into different libraries like RxJS and Immutable.js that take the ideas of functional reactive programming to the next level.

Orient Flux: Step inside Weirdcore’s new time-bending Beijing exhibition

Whilst exhibitions remain at a standstill in countries across the world due to the pandemic, there is, currently, one exhibition that’s gathering momentum in Beijing.

The Chinese capital is hosting Weirdcore’s first solo exhibition, Orient Flux, on the fourth floor of the department store SKP-S. The London-based digital artist has, in the past, created mind-melting visuals for pioneering artists such as Aphex Twin. Think optical illusions paired with pop culture references and internet ephemera, combined with hyperactive light shows to produce surreal and frenetic experiences.

It’s not the first time that Weirdcore has produced a show for a shopping complex, having previously conceptualised the Loro Piana installation at Tokyo’s Ginza store. For Orient Flux – billed as an “airport of the future”, Weirdcore brings his surrealist vision to China. The exhibition is comprised of seven different rooms, lasers – of course – and an illusory bullet train called the Trans-Aeon Express, that passengers are invited to board. What’s more, the immersive experience is completed by its sound design, helmed by SVBKVLT’s Gooooose and 33EMYBW – two Shanghai producers at the forefront of China’s electronic scene.

We catch up with Weirdcore, Gooooose and 33EMYBW to talk Orient Flux, its soundtrack and some exciting projects they’ve got coming up.

How did the idea for Orient Flux come about?

Weirdcore: I was commissioned by SKPs/t-10, via Kennedy London, who produced it.

There’s a number of cinematic references in your exhibition. Could you elaborate on these further?

Weirdcore: I’m a sci-fi nerd and love the bold aesthetics from the 60s to 80s sci-fi films. The main films that visually inspired [the exhibition] are Logan’s Run (2001), A Space Odyssey, Colossus: The Forbin Project and Saturn 3. Visually, the whole Aphex team was involved. Dave Ross designed the lights and lasers and ER managed the lasers, so it was the same crew as for Aphex shows.

The location is certainly interesting. As I understand, there’s usually installations inside stores at SKP-S. How does Beijing, and the department store, tie into the concept of Orient Flux?

Weirdcore: Well, the venue is really massive and from the photos I’d seen, the main big room somewhat reminded me of a train station. The theme snowballed from there. The exhibit is meant to be a station for time and dimension travels – not space and time, as somehow mentioned in all other reviews so far. As you start and end in Stellar Lounge, you’re back in the same place geographically but with a question mark in terms of it being the same era or dimension.

For those of us who won’t be able to see the exhibition, can you walk me through the different rooms?

Weirdcore: The different sections of the exhibit are like different stages of travels. Maze is like queuing, luggage checking and the security bits, Oblique is like going through security and Microcosmic is like a compression or decompression zone – similar to when you go deep sea diving, but, in this case, adjusting your body for dimension/time travel. Then, Infinity Gates is like walking to the departure gates, Dimensional Horizon is a form of dimensional travel and Trans-Aeon Express is a form of time travel.

The Trans-Aeon Express is a journey back through China’s vivid history. Which parts of China’s history did you focus on?

Weirdcore: The Tang and Qing dynasty, prehistory and the future.

What are some of the key musical references used for this exhibition?

Weirdcore: The main references I sent to 33EMYBW and Han (Gooooose) were OST’s of Logan’s Run, Escape from New York and sound design from Saturn 3 [and] Poltergeist. I told Han and 33 to treat it as if they were to rescore these films now, so it’s in the same vibe but modern and in their style.

Music and sound design are both key parts of the exhibition, particularly as the Stellar Lounge is described as an ambient portal. Can you tell me more about the link between sound and the concept of the rooms?

33EMYBW: Weirdcore’s work gave me a very strong imagination and inspiration about sound. The first time I watched the videos of five rooms, I almost knew how I would do it. In addition to that, Weirdcore used some movie scenes to describe the work, which also made it easy for me to find the tones and sound effects needed for the video. To me, unlike the soundtrack of a movie, this is an immersive exhibition with a huge amount of visitors. I hope that the audience will get not only visual impact, plus matching music, but a multiple experience of visual and auditory interconnection. So, I did my  to consider the role and influence of space, and even the speed at which people move when they visit.

Gooooose: We (me and 33EMYBW) discussed several times and decided we will separately work on different areas rather than working together on all areas. Basically I was working on Stellar Lounge, Maze Oblique, Infinity Gate and Trans-Aeon Express, plus some transitional sounds that connects different areas.

I think it was very important that Weirdcore explained what kind of mood he was expecting quite well during the project, so for the areas that I worked on, I didn’t have to face the problem of too many options. For those areas, the music and sound design are leaning more into the functional side, sort of like scoring a film. I thought that if I can find a core concept that fits the whole artwork, then the next step might be as simple as just fine-tuning the same concept to different moods of each room. So, the core concept is pentatonic scale, which was used quite a lot in ancient China. Then I used several different variations of the scale in each area, kind of like what they do in jazz music. The notes are everywhere, but, because the frequency pattern of different pentatonic scales would keep going, people might still feel that there is some kind of unison sonically and subconsciously.

In terms of sound design, some of the sound is phase inverted so they could sound like they’re coming from another room. Because there are many speakers onsite, for some of the sound I made several versions with slight frequency differences from each other, so when people are standing in the space they will hear the sound moving in a more interesting way than just panning. They will hear different movement of the same sound depending on where they are standing. I think by doing this, the moving, flowing, wobbling feel of the overall piece is intensified.

Will the sound design for the exhibition be released anywhere afterwards?

Gooooose: Yes! We were talking about that with Gaz [Williams] from SVBKVLT. Hopefully it will be released this year around June.

How did you go about constructing this installation from afar?

Weirdcore: For me, [it] was a total pain, as I never got to go to China, ever. So, setting up my first solo exhibit remotely was a challenge. Luckily, the team at Kennedy London were on top of it all.

In what ways has the pandemic affected the way you work?

Weirdcore: It had a major impact, as the exhibit was originally meant to launch in April 2020. But once China went into lockdown, it seemed unsure to be going ahead. Once we went into lockdown, it was postponed. Then after the summer, when we realised it seemed unlikely we were going to go, we decided to do it remotely. It was hard to get back into the swing of things as we’d abruptly stopped mid-creative development in the first lockdown, just as the production stage started in the second lockdown. So, [it] wasn’t the smoothest of projects.

What’s next?

Weirdcore: I’m currently working on something with Yaeji, and other projects with A. G. Cook and Slikback are also in the pipeline. Some epic new Aphex stuff – hopefully, maybe.

33EMYBW: I’m about to start working on my next release under SVBKVLT.
