QAnon

Nov. 22, 1963, was a tragic day in US history when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. On Monday, a group of QAnon believers remain at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, the site of the president's assassination almost 60 years ago today. They're awaiting the return of his son, John F. Kennedy Jr., in hopes he will turn over the presidency to former President Donald Trump. This is all part of the QAnon conspiracy theory that continues to thrive even though the claims made are bogus.

It's been more than a year since President Joe Biden won the presidential election, but adherents of the far-right fringe theory are still faithful to the movement. A group of Q followers went to Dallas on Nov. 2 in hopes of seeing John F. Kennedy Jr., who died in a plane crash in 1999. The deceased son of the assassinated president didn't rise from his grave then and has yet to do so on Monday, but yet they still gather at Dealey Plaza, waving their pro-Trump signs.

The belief that he's still alive and acting as a secret confidant for Trump started in 2018, according to a QAnon expert who uses the pseudonym Travis View. Like much of what the Q followers believe, it began with a post on the anonymous image-board 4Chan. A person calling themselves "R" posted a picture from 1996 of JFK Jr. with Trump. After that, QAnon believers not only thought JFK Jr. was miraculously still alive, they also claimed he'd be Trump's running mate. There are even some people in the movement claiming they themselves are JFK Jr.

On Nov. 2, QAnon believers camped out at Dealey Plaza, site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. The conspiracy theory falsely claimed JFK Jr. would return sometime in the afternoon. From there, he'd become president of the US or somehow have the power to turn over the office to Trump. This group are followers of a Q influencer who's continued to claim that even though JFK Jr. didn't show up on Nov. 2, he'll show up on Nov. 17 or on Nov. 22, the anniversary of his father's killing, according to a report from Vice. Followers have been seen with Trump signs and playing the music of Michael Jackson, who they also believe is still alive.

There isn't any truth whatsoever to this claim, but that hasn't stopped QAnon believers before.

QAnon falsely believes Trump was leading a holy war against a cabal of Democratic leaders and Hollywood celebrities who they claimed were pedophiles and Satanists. Understanding QAnon requires looking at how it began and what its followers believe. The hoax has already provoked violence in the real world, with numerous Q followers participating in the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol.

QAnon Shaman

If you have questions about QAnon, we have answers.

QAnon sounds nuts. What can you tell me about it?

QAnon is an online conspiracy theory that claims Trump is waging a secret war against a deep state of Democratic elites and Hollywood stars who are pedophiles and Satan worshipers. Cannibalism is in there someplace too. Really, that's what they believe.

The conspiracy theory dates back to October 2017, when an anonymous post on a message board said extradition agreements had been struck with several countries "in case of cross border run" by Hillary Clinton, Trump's Democratic rival for the White House in 2016. (That run still hasn't happened.) The person or group behind the post eventually came to be known as "Q," which is where the conspiracy theory's name comes from.

Since then, the conspiracy theory has gotten wider and weirder. It's now folded in former President Barack Obama and billionaire philanthropist George Soros, both of whom, among other well-known figures, are frequent subjects of online conspiracy theories.

By the way, Q is a reference to the highest security level clearance at the Department of Energy. That's the department that oversees nuclear weapons. Q claims to have worked in close proximity to Trump and the inner circle of his administration.

Didn't Joe Biden's presidential win stop this conspiracy theory?

QAnon believers tuned in to Biden's inauguration expecting a last-minute military takeover or an order for martial law from Trump before the noontime transfer of power. That, obviously, didn't happen, and many followers took to various social media platforms such as Gab and Telegram to share in their confusion.

The more prominent names within the movement continue expressing their faith that something will change to remove Biden from office. 8kun, the anonymous message board where Q posts, saw a brief meltdown by one of the moderators who deleted all the content from its "Q research" forum shortly after the inauguration. Some hours later it returned back to "normal" with posts from users who continue to believe and from others who mock them.

A survey taken in January from the American Enterprise Institute shows 29% of Republicans completely or mostly agree that Trump was "secretly fighting a group of child sex traffickers that include prominent Democrats and Hollywood elites."

Who is Q?

Other than Q, we can't say for sure.

Of course, more than one person has claimed to be Q, with one theory saying the mysterious figure is a time traveler. (Even some QAnon followers, who have proved they'll believe just about anything, think that's a bit too crazy.)

Paul Furber, a conspiracy theorist from Johannesburg, South Africa, has been identified as possibly being the original Q poster because of an appearance he made on the Alex Jones-hosted InfoWars TV show a few months after the first post. The appearance on the conspiracy-minded program, which has a following among Trump supporters, was key to bringing QAnon from online message boards to a more mainstream audience.

Stay in the know. Get the latest tech stories from CNET News every weekday.

Jim Watkins, the owner of the 8kun message board, is another person often speculated to be the mysterious figure because Q's posts migrated to his site not long after they first appeared. Fredrick Brennan, who created 8chan, the predecessor of 8kun, says the message board's authentication system, known as secure tripcodes, could prove who's using the handle. In the case of 8chan and 8kun, a secure tripcode is verified by the site's server and can identify a user via a specific number within a post, even though the message boards let users stay anonymous. Jim Watkins has administrative privileges at 8kun and could use the Q-specific tripcode at any time.

In the HBO docuseries Q: Into the Storm, director Cullen Hoback claims Ron Watkins, Jim Watkins' son and former admin for 8chan/8kun, is the person behind Q. Hoback covered both Watkins and Brennan over the course of three years since they were the core people who ran 8chan back in 2018 where Q began posting messages. In his final interview with Ron Watkins, Hoback believes Watkins revealed a bit too much.

Ron Watksin

"Yeah, so thinking back on it, like, it was basically ... three years of intelligence training teaching normies how to do intelligence work. It was basically what I was doing anonymously but before, never as Q," Ron Watkins said in the video call, before breaking into a big grin. Hoback goes on to say that this is when Watkins slipped up, and they both knew it.

The last Q drop was on Dec. 8, 2020, and consisted of a YouTube link to a pro-Trump video featuring the song We're Not Gonna Take It from '80s heavy metal band Twisted Sister. It's since been removed but then uploaded to BitChute.

Around the same time of the final Q drop, Ron Watkins began appearing on right-wing news programs and spreading conspiracy theories about the presidential election while also tweeting misinformation similar to Q. Twitter banned his account after the Jan. 6 insurrection. Since the show's premiere, he has posted denials of his involvement with Q on his Telegram account.

In October, Ron Watkins said he filed paperwork to run for Congress representing Arizona.

Neither Furber nor either of the Watkins responded to requests for comment.

What happened on March 4, 2021?

Nothing. Well, nothing that QAnon followers were expecting. Apple added the option to transfer iCloud photos to Google Photos, Square purchased a stake in Tidal, and the PS5 was in stock for a few minutes at Walmart. Aside from that, there was no insurrection on March 4, 2021.

As for why March 4: It was the day when the Constitution was made effective in 1789 and the original inauguration date for presidents from 1793 until the adoption of the 20th Amendment in 1933. The goal of the amendment was to reduce the length of the "lame duck" period after an election.

Taking a page from the sovereign citizen movement, a group with its own interpretation of US laws and viewed as domestic terrorists by the FBI, QAnon followers believe the amendment isn't law. (The explanation for this belief is long, tortured and wrong. It has to do with a bogus interpretation of the District of Columbia Organic Act of 1871. Feel free to read it if you have that kind of time.) In their interpretation, there hasn't been a real president of the US since Ulysses S. Grant.

Law enforcement was aware of conspiracies surrounding the date and took precautions. The Capitol Police said it was upgrading security around the Capitol in preparation for a possible attack similar to the Jan. 6 insurrection. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI also sent out a report about extremists planning attacks on the date.

QAnon followers then focused their attention on the next date when they believed Trump would return to office: March 20.

Some Q believers thought Trump still had control over the military by virtue of the Presidential Transition Enhancement Act of 2019. There's no shred of truth to this.

The Presidential Transition Enhancement Act of 2019 made changes to how the General Services Administration handles the transfer of power between administrations. Many of the adjustments focus on preparation before the election, but there's a 60-day period after the inauguration when the GSA will provide support to the new administration. QAnon followers mistakenly believe this meant Trump would retain his powers over the military during this time and he'd use the armed forces to become president again. Once more: This isn't true.

There are Q followers who believe Trump is still in power, and that Biden is just a puppet for now.

How did QAnon jump from online to the real world?

Since Furber appeared on InfoWars, Q followers have taken to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even TikTok to generate huge followings with their attempts to decipher the arcane messages. Q followers, who refer to themselves as "anons," are regulars at Trump rallies, even though they get turned away by security. They've also formed their own rallies with the message of "#SaveTheChildren," co-opting a hashtag used by legitimate organizations combating child trafficking. A poll from Yahoo News/YouGov published in October 2020 showed 50% of Trump supporters falsely believe top members of the Democratic party are involved in elite child sex-trafficking rings.

The fanaticism over QAnon has also fostered criminal acts. In June 2018, a Q follower blocked traffic on the Hoover Dam with an armored vehicle before being apprehended by police. He pleaded guilty to terrorism charges this past February. A man accused of killing a New York mob boss in March 2019 identified himself as a follower, appeared in court with the letter Q drawn on his palm. His lawyer said he was fascinated with QAnon and other far-right conspiracy theories, and he was later found unfit to stand trial. Multiplewomen who identify as Q followers face charges of kidnapping their own children, believing that they're saving the youngsters from trafficking. In August, a man who killed his two children claimed he was a Q believer.

The riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 put QAnon in the spotlight again, with the death of Ashli Babbitt, a 14-year Air Force veteran who had posted on social media about her belief in the conspiracy theory. Babbitt was in Washington as part of the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol building while Congress was counting electoral votes, and she died after being shot by law enforcement near the barricaded door to the Speaker's Lobby. Four other people died during the riot, including a Capitol police officer. Approximately one in 10 arrested from the riot had a connection to QAnon, according to a 60 Minutes report on Feb. 21.

Concern about QAnon has grown so great that the FBI said in 2019 that the movement represents a domestic terrorist threat. The agency is looking for suspects who participated in the Jan. 6 raid on Capitol Hill. A US Defense Department internal threat assessment dated Dec. 21, 2020, mentioned QAnon as part of a post-election increase in "the potential for civil disturbance activity" and "level of civil disturbance activity," as reported by The Intercept on Jan. 13. The National Counterterrorism Center, the Justice and Homeland Security Departments sent a bulletin to law enforcement agencies warning of domestic violent extremists who took part in the Jan. 6 insurrection and were QAnon believers,

The House of Representatives has also condemned the unhinged theory, though a handful of lawmakers voted against the resolution.

Nonetheless, the popularity and influence of the conspiracy theory continue to grow. Dozens of self-identified QAnon believers ran for office in the November election. Of the numerous candidates, two were successful.

Lauren Boerbert, a Republican from Colorado, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, took their oath at the House of Representatives on Jan. 3 after winning their respective races. Both women posted QAnon content to their social media accounts prior to taking office.

Are social media and tech companies doing anything about QAnon?

Like a lot of fringe ideologies, QAnon spreads quickest on social media. The YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok platforms have all played an important role in expanding the number of QAnon followers.

Social media companies are aware and have begun to take action.

In August 2020, Facebook removed or demoted thousands of QAnon groups and pages after an internal investigation found they were violating its policies. The company also removed thousands of QAnon accounts from its photo-based social network, Instagram. Facebook ramped up its response on Oct. 6, 2020, saying it would remove all Facebook pages, groups and Instagram accounts representing QAnon. Facebook said that it removed 3,300 pages, 10,500 groups, 510 events, 18,300 profiles and 27,300 Instagram accounts as of Jan. 12 for violating its policies on QAnon.

Twitter began cracking down on QAnon accounts in July 2020. It removed thousands of accounts that tweeted about the movement, though some have since restarted under different names. That same month, TikTok began banning QAnon-related hashtags, making videos harder to find on the platform.

And YouTube said moderation policies implemented in early 2020 have reduced the views of QAnon videos by 70%. The video platform stepped up enforcement of its policies as it began banning videos featuring the conspiracy theory on Oct. 15, 2020.

A group of banned users filed a complaint against YouTube and its parent company, Google, on Oct. 26, 2020. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court in the Northern District of California, alleges that the video platform is in breach of contract and in violation of the First Amendment's guarantee of free speech. Such protection, under the First Amendment, applies only to the government censoring speech.

A spokesperson for YouTube said in an emailed statement that the company's policies are updated regularly to meet new challenges, like harmful conspiracy theories that have been used to justify real-world violence.

Reddit has also taken steps to curb the reach of QAnon posts and subreddits.

LinkedIn, the social media platform focused on professional networking, isn't a stranger to QAnon. Users began posting misinformation and filling their profiles with QAnon slogans, which led to a crackdown by the site.

Pinterest began its crackdown on QAnon content in August 2018. A spokesperson for the company says it also disabled search results for anything related to the conspiracy theory.

Triller is a TikTok alternative growing in popularity, and it's started banning QAnon-related videos.

"In light of the recent addition by the FBI of QAnon to its list of terrorist activity, we have initiated a ban of QAnon content," company CEO Mike Lu said in an emailed statement. "We are a platform that believes in freedom of speech, expression, open discussion and freedom of opinion, however when the government classifies something as a terrorist threat, we must take action to protect our community."

The e-commerce site Etsy cracked down on QAnon, according to a report from Business Insider on Oct. 7, 2020. The company says it'll remove any merchandise related to the fringe movement.

Even the fitness-tech company Peloton intervened when customers began using QAnon-related hashtags, according to a report by Business Insider. Tags such as #SaveTheChildren, #Q and #WWGOnePelotonWGA showed up on Peloton machines, allowing users to find other Q followers.

"We have a zero tolerance policy against hateful content. We actively moderate our channels and remove anything that violates our policy or does not reflect our company's values of inclusiveness and unity or maintain a respectful environment," a Peloton spokesperson told CNET in an email. The QAnon hashtags have since been removed from the platform.

The crowdfunding platform Patreon, though not a social media company, has been important for some of the more prominent QAnon members. The company said it's taking action against creators who spread the conspiracy theory, by closing their accounts.

OK, I have to ask: What are some of the other wacky ideas QAnon followers believe?

Are you sure you want to know? Keep in mind these ideas are completely baseless.

The core belief is that Trump is working to remove Satanic criminals inside the government, the Democratic Party and Hollywood.

Followers believe notable members of the Democratic party and the Hollywood elite operate pedophile rings. Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres are baselessly named as being participants. (CNET didn't contact any of these celebrities for comment because the accusations are bogus.)

QAnon ropes in a host of other popular conspiracy theories, including flat Earth and anti-vax. Believers have been at the forefront of misinformation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Among their wild and unfounded notions: The Chinese government created the virus, Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates will use the pandemic to microchip Americans, and the pandemic is a hoax designed to sink Trump's reelection. They've also been vehemently against the COVID vaccine by constantly sharing misinformation about it.

McAfee, like most other modern antivirus programs, doesn’t stay out of your way. It installs browser extensions and shows various alert messages you might not want to see. If McAfee came with your PC, you may regularly see messages that your subscription is expired. Here’s how to get rid of that noise.

RELATED:What's the Best Antivirus for Windows 10? (Is Windows Defender Good Enough?)

The below steps were performed with McAfee LiveSafe, but should be similar with other McAfee editions of McAfee’s antivirus software. To learn more about which antivirus programs we recommend, check out this guide.

Did McAfee Come With Your PC? Consider Uninstalling It

RELATED:How Computer Manufacturers Are Paid to Make Your Laptop Worse

If you’ve installed McAfee because you want to use it, that’s fine. However, many people don’t choose to install McAfee. Instead, many PC manufacturers bundle a time-limited trial version of McAfee on their new PCs. You quickly see notifications that your subscription is expired and you need to pay for McAfee antivirus protection. Companies like McAfee pay PC manufacturers to install their software on new PCs so they can advertise to you.

Rather than paying up, head to Control Panel > Uninstall a Program and uninstall the McAfee software. You can then install a better antivirus product, some of which are available for free—or just use the Windows Defender antivirus, which is built into Windows 10. Even if you’re looking for a paid antivirus product, McAfee isn’t our first choice.

Get Rid of McAfee’s Browser Extensions

RELATED:Don't Use Your Antivirus' Browser Extensions: They Can Actually Make You Less Safe

McAfee bundles the “McAfee WebAdvisor” browser extensions for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer. This extension sits in your browser, warning you about weak passwords and dangerous downloads. But your antivirus software already scans your downloads whether you install a browser extension or not, and we don’t recommend using your antivirus’s browser extensions.

In Google Chrome, click the menu and select More Tools > Extensions. Click the trash can to the right of the McAfee WebAdvisor extension to remove it.

In Mozilla Firefox, click the menu button and select “Add-ons”. Click the “Disable” button to the right of the McAfee WebAdvisor add-on.

In Internet Explorer, click the menu button and select “Add-ons”. Select the McAfee WebAdvisor add-on under Toolbars and Extensions and click the “Disable” button at the bottom of the window. You can also head to Control Panel > Uninstall a Program and uninstall the “McAfee WebAdvisor” software that appears here to completely remove it from Internet Explorer.

Disable Most of McAfee’s Alerts

The rest of McAfee’s settings are located in its interface. To access it, find the McAfee icon in your notification area—it looks like a red shield with an “M” inside it—and double-click it. This icon may be hidden behind the up arrow to the left of your system tray icons.

Click the “Navigation” link in the right pane of the McAfee window and then click “General Settings and Alerts” under Settings.

Click the “Informational Alerts” and “Protection Alerts” categories here and choose which type of alert messages you don’t want to see. For example, you can tell McAfee not to show alerts when you insert removable media drives into your PC and when McAfee allows programs to connect to the Internet.

Hide Firewall Prompts

McAfee’s built-in firewall can be set to ask for your permission whenever a program tries to connect to the Internet. If you see firewall prompts, you can disable them and have McAfee automatically decide what’s best on its own.

To find McAfee’s firewall settings, click the “Home” link at the right side of the McAfee window to access the home screen. From the Home screen, click Manage Security > Web and Email Protection > Firewall. Expand the “Smart Advice and Advanced Settings” category here and ensure it’s set to “Enable Smart Advice” and “Decide automatically”.

McAfee should be quieter after you change these settings, getting out of your web browser and showing you as few alerts as possible.

QAnon

Nov. 22, 1963, was a tragic day in US history when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. On Monday, a group of QAnon believers remain at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, the site of the president's mcafee promo - Crack Key For U almost 60 years ago today.

6 attack on the US Capitol.

mcafee promo - Crack Key For U Shaman" height="430" width="644">

If you have questions about QAnon, we have answers.

QAnon sounds nuts. What can you tell me about it?

QAnon is an online conspiracy theory that claims Trump is waging a secret mcafee promo - Crack Key For U against a deep state of Democratic elites and Hollywood stars who are pedophiles and Satan worshipers.

(That run still hasn't happened.) The person or group behind the post eventually came to be known as "Q," which is where sylenth1 3.032 keygen - Crack Key For U conspiracy theory's name comes from.

Ron Watksin

"Yeah, so thinking back on it, like, it was basically . three years of intelligence training teaching normies how to do intelligence work.

Since Furber appeared on InfoWars, Q followers have taken to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even TikTok to generate huge followings with their attempts to mcafee promo - Crack Key For U the arcane messages.

Advanced systemcare iobit one in 10 arrested from the riot had a connection to QAnon, according to a 60 Minutes report on Feb.

Antivirus programs used to be simple: They protected your PC from malware, viruses, and suspicious Internet sites, and that was that. But now we’re using multiple devices—often interchangeably—and we’re trusting our data to videosolo video converter ultimate review - Activators Patch cloud. What’s a security company to do?

For McAfee, the answer is a security suite that offers protection for every aspect of your digital life. LiveSafe isn’t just an antivirus program—it’s comprehensive digital security for your cloud files, your passwords, and your many, many devices.

Installation

LiveSafe ($80 for a one-year subscription, $20 if purchased with an Intel Ultrabook) comes as a small plastic card with a product key. The key lets you download and install the program on as many computers, tablets, and phones as you like (McAfee tells me there is no limit, though the company does reserve the right to investigate suspicious activity). LiveSafe is compatible with most platforms, including Windows PCs; Macs; and Android, iOS, and BlackBerry devices.  It’s not yet available for Chromebooks or Windows Phones, but that may change in the future as the market shifts.

The only hitch I ran into—and it was a pretty big one—was trying to install the program on computers that already had an antivirus program installed: a desktop running Windows Vista with Norton 360, and a laptop running Windows 8 with a 60-day trial version of Norton Internet Security. In both cases, LiveSafe appeared to flag Norton’s security programs as dangerous and then proceeded to shut down.

While mcafee promo - Crack Key For U response is not abnormal—after all, antivirus programs act a lot like viruses themselves, digging deep into your PC’s underbelly and accessing root files in order to sniff out malware—LiveSafe’s response was. Instead of prompting me to uninstall the offending Norton programs, LiveSafe crashed. On the Windows 8 laptop, the program gave me an error message and then shut down; on the Vista desktop, the program caused my computer to go into a blue-screen fit and then LiveSafe shut down. When I asked McAfee about this, I was told there should be a warning that asks you to uninstall Norton before proceeding. However, I never received one despite several installation attempts. Uninstalling Norton’s programs first allowed me to install LiveSafe smoothly in both cases, but I would have preferred that LiveSafe alert me more gently to the Norton issue.

Design and features

LiveSafe has optimized its interface for Windows 8 users, which essentially means you get large buttons for features and navigation instead of small, difficult-to-press links. The optimization peters out quickly, though: I noticed a few link-heavy menus (such office 2007 download - Crack Key For U the Navigation Center).

LiveSafe displays the most important information in its main window. A color-coded bar along the top indicates whether your computer is secure or vulnerable. From here, you can also quickly access protection for viruses, spyware, Web content, and email—as well as check that your software updates are current and your subscription is still active.

LiveSafe’s most distinctive feature is McAfee Personal Locker, a secure cloud storage space (1GB) designed specifically for highly sensitive documents. Personal Locker uses biometric protection—facial and voice authentication—along with a PIN. Facial recognition is fairly simple: You take a photo of yourself driver navigator preactivated download the device you’re using, and Personal Locker compares it to a photo of you it has on file. Voice recognition is a little more complicated, featuring two sentences that you must read aloud to the machine. The first sentence is the same every time. The second sentence is randomly generated from Personal Locker’s archives, to check for “alive-ness.” This way, nobody can crack your Personal Locker with a photo and a voice recording.

Personal Locker also lets you set different levels of security for different files: a PIN only for less-sensitive documents, and full facial and voice authentication for more valuable assets. Best of all, even if your subscription lapses, you’ll still have access to your account for three months afterward.

Another interesting feature is McAfee SafeKey, which creates and stores unique, secure passwords and syncs them across all your devices. You can install it as an add-on to your Web browser or as an app on your devices.

LiveSafe also comes with 24/7 tech support, and if you purchase LiveSafe with an Intel-branded Ultrabook, you’ll get an extra perk: a McAfee tip and help hotline.

Protection

LiveSafe offers antivirus, antimalware, and hardware-enhanced antitheft protection. The antitheft protection is similar to Apple’s Find My iPhone feature and other device-tracking software: It lets you locate and remotely lock lost or stolen devices, remotely secure data, and protect data against uninstalls.

We consulted independent data from AV-Test’s July/August 2013 antivirus tests. AV-Test ran 26 consumer products and nine business products on a computer running Windows 7 (SP1). The test used the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as the baseline, which offered 91 percent protection against zero-day malware attacks in a real-world testing environment.

By comparison, McAfee LiveSafe Internet Security offered 97 percent protection against zero-day malware attacks in real-world tests, which is better than MSE but not as good as other products on the market. LiveSafe detected false positives and false warning messages, flagging only one case of legitimate software as dangerous.

AV-Test did not test the mobile (phone and tablet) segments of LiveSafe. The Android version of LiveSafe offers a security scan, as well as privacy tests (the app can check other apps for exposure), automatic Web monitoring, backup, and device tracking.

The bottom line

McAfee’s LiveSafe is a great deal for a multi-device individual or family, as it allows an unlimited number of devices per subscription. Its antivirus performance is pretty good, but its protected cloud storage and password manager really make it stand out from the competition.

Laser Technology Could Attract Aliens

An MIT study proposes that laser technology on Earth could emit a beacon strong enough to attract attention from as far as 20,000 light years away. Image: MIT News

If extraterrestrial intelligence exists somewhere in our galaxy, a new MIT study proposes that laser technology on Earth could, in principle, be fashioned into something of a planetary porch light — a beacon strong enough to attract attention from as far as 20,000 light years away.

The research, which author James Clark calls a “feasibility study,” appears today in The Astrophysical Journal. The findings suggest that if a high-powered 1- to 2-megawatt laser were focused through a massive 30- to 45-meter telescope and aimed out into space, the combination would produce a beam of infrared radiation strong enough to stand out from the sun’s energy.

Such a signal could be detectable by alien astronomers performing a cursory survey of our section of the Milky Way — especially if those astronomers live in nearby systems, such as around Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to Earth, or TRAPPIST-1, a star about 40 light-years away that hosts seven exoplanets, three of which are potentially habitable. If the signal is spotted from either of these nearby systems, the study finds, the same megawatt laser could be used to send a brief message in the form of pulses similar to Morse code.

“If we were to successfully close a handshake and start to communicate, we could flash a message, at a data rate of about a few hundred bits per second, which would get there in just a few years,” says Clark, a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and author of the study.

The notion of such an alien-attracting beacon may seem far-fetched, but Clark says the feat can be realized with a combination of technologies that exist now and that could be developed in the near term.

“This would be a challenging project but not an impossible one,” Clark says. “The kinds of lasers and telescopes that are being built today can produce a detectable signal, so that an astronomer could take one look at our star and immediately see something unusual about its spectrum. I don’t know if intelligent creatures around the sun would be their first guess, but it would certainly attract further attention.”

Standing up to the sun

Clark started looking into the possibility of a planetary beacon as part of a final project for 16.343 (Spacecraft, and Aircraft Sensors and Instrumentation), VSO ConvertXtoDVD 7.0.0.73 Crack Serial Key Latest Version Download course taught by Clark’s advisor, Associate Professor Kerri Cahoy.

“I wanted to see if I could take the kinds of telescopes and lasers that we’re building today, and make a detectable beacon out of them,” Clark says.

He started with a simple conceptual design involving a large infrared laser and a telescope through which to further focus the laser’s intensity. His aim was to produce an infrared signal that was at least 10 times greater than the sun’s natural variation of infrared emissions. Such an intense signal, he reasoned, would be enough to stand out against the sun’s own infrared signal, in any “cursory survey by an extraterrestrial intelligence.”

He analyzed combinations of lasers and telescopes of various wattage and size, and found that a 2-megawatt laser, pointed through a 30-meter telescope, could produce a signal strong enough to be easily detectable by astronomers in Proxima Centauri b, a planet that orbits our closest star, 4 light-years away. Similarly, a 1-megawatt laser, directed through a 45-meter telescope, would generate a clear signal in any survey conducted by astronomers within the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system, about 40 light-years away. Either setup, he estimated, could produce a generally detectable signal from mcafee promo - Crack Key For U to 20,000 light-years away.

Both scenarios would require laser and telescope technology that has either already been developed, or is within practical reach. For instance, Clark calculated that the required laser power of 1 to 2 megawatts is equivalent to that of the U.S. Air Force’s Airborne Laser, a now-defunct megawatt laser that was meant to fly aboard a military jet for the purpose of shooting ballistic missiles out of the sky. He also found that while a 30-meter telescope considerably dwarfs any existing observatory on Earth today, there are plans to build such massive telescopes in the near future, including the 24-meter Giant Magellan Telescope and the 39-meter European Extremely Large Telescope, both of which are currently under construction in Chile.

Clark envisions that, like these massive observatories, a laser beacon should be built atop a mountain, to minimize the amount of atmosphere the laser would have to penetrate before beaming out into space.

He acknowledges that a megawatt laser would come with some safety issues. Such a beam would produce a flux density of about 800 watts of power per square meter, which is approaching that of the sun, which generates about 1,300 watts per square meter. While the beam wouldn’t be visible, it could still damage people’s vision if they were to look directly at it. The beam could also potentially scramble any cameras aboard spacecraft that happen to pass through it.

“If you wanted to build this thing on the far side of the moon where no one’s living or orbiting much, then that could be a safer place for it,” Clark says. “In general, this was a feasibility study. Whether or not this is a good idea, that’s a discussion for future work.”

Taking E.T.’s call

Having established that a planetary beacon is technically feasible, Clark then flipped the problem and looked at whether today’s imaging techniques would be able to detect such an infrared beacon if it were produced by astronomers elsewhere in the galaxy. He found that, while a telescope 1 meter or larger would be capable of spotting such a beacon, it would have to point in the signal’s exact direction to see it.

“It is vanishingly unlikely that a telescope survey would actually observe an extraterrestrial laser, unless we restrict our survey to the very nearest stars,” Clark says.

He hopes the study will encourage the development of infrared imaging techniques, not only to spot any laser beacons that might be produced by alien astronomers, but also to identify gases in a distant planet’s atmosphere that might be indications of life.

“With current survey methods and instruments, it is unlikely that we would actually be lucky enough to image a beacon flash, assuming that extraterrestrials exist and are making them,” Clark says. “However, as the infrared spectra of exoplanets are studied for traces of gases that indicate the viability of life, and as full-sky surveys attain greater coverage and become more rapid, we can be more certain that, if E.T. is phoning, we will detect it.”

With an emphasis on protecting multiple machines on multiple platforms, McAfee's antivirus programs do much more than the minimum.

They offer good, if not perfect, malware detection, and recently added features such as unlimited virtual private network (VPN) service and identity-theft protection complement the newly streamlined interface.

On the other hand, McAfee uses a lot of system resources during scans and lacks some security features found with other brands, including dedicated webcam protection and a hardened browser for online shopping and banking.

Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton's programs are among the best antivirus suites that offer more features with better malware protection and lighter scans.

One more thing: McAfee's VPN and identity-theft protection, plus its money-back guarantee, are available only if you let your McAfee subscription automatically renew. In other words, you won't get everything you pay for unless you commit ahead of time to paying for it again.

Read on for the rest of our McAfee review.

McAfee 2021: Costs and what's covered

McAfee has no free antivirus program, but you can try out McAfee Total Protection for 30 days for free.

The product range starts with McAfee AntiVirus, which covers a single Windows PC for $40 per year. It's got dedicated ransomware protection, a file shredder, a system optimizer and a two-way firewall, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that warn of unsafe websites, tech-support scams and risky social-media links.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus has the same features but covers up to 10 devices (in Audacity Free Activate experience, an unlimited number) for $60 per year and includes Mac, iOS and Android software — a bargain for any person or family with many devices. (We have separate reviews ofMcAfee's Mac andAndroid programs.)

McAfee Internet Security adds theTrue Key password manager (also reviewed separately) and an email spam filter. The program costs $60 per year for one device, $80 per year for three and $90 per year to protect 10 systems.

McAfee's flagship Total Protection and LiveSafe programs are similar, but while Total Protection is sold at retail, LiveSafe often comes with new PCs as a trial subscription.

Both include Safe Family parental controls, identity-theft protection (for U.S. customers only) and unlimited access to McAfee's virtual private network (VPN), but you've got to keep the McAfee subscription auto-renewal activated for the last two features. Neither the VPN nor the parental controls work with McAfee's Mac software.

While LiveSafe covers an unlimited number of devices for $120 per year, Total Protection has four different packages.

The $80 yearly Single Device subscription protects one PC but lacks file encryption or identity-theft protection. To get those, you'll need the $100 Individual/Couples package that covers five computers. For $120 per year, the Family plan covers 10 systems and adds Safe Family parental controls; its VPN use is limited to five users.

At the top of the pyramid is McAfee's $160 Total Protection Ultimate subscription, which adds Identity Theft Protection Plus, which includes credit-bureau monitoring and up to $1,000,000 for identity restoration.

Considering that thebest identity-theft protection services costs hundreds per year, this isn't a bad deal. Total Protection Ultimate covers 10 devices but also restricts VPN access to five users.

Today's best McAfee Total Protection Ultimate deals

A stand-alone program, McAfee Gamer Security, costs $60 a year for a single Windows PC and balances online security with all-out performance. It uses McAfee's cloud resources to avoid placing an undue burden on your CPU. Once again, you get the VPN, identity protection and money-back guarantee if you leave the auto-renewal option on.

Like most antivirus software, McAfee products are often available at substantial discounts. Some programs may be easier to find at third-party retailers than on the McAfee website.

McAfee software works with Windows 7 (with Service Pack 1) through Windows 10. (McAfee Gamer Security requires Windows 10 version 1809 or later.) Software for other platforms supports macOS 10.12 through 10.15 and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or later. McAfee Mobile Security for iPhones and iPads supports iOS 10 or later, but it isn't an antivirus app.

McAfee 2021: Antivirus protection

All five McAfee antivirus products scan for known malware and use cloud computing and machine learning to spot brand-new malware and other dangerous items. Updates for the McAfee malware scanner go out several times daily to the company's 500 million consumer and business users.

To keep McAfee's database current, the malware scanner on your machine will send new potential threats to McAfee servers. The scanner collects data only on threats you encounter and ignores your browsing history, passwords and other personal information, according to McAfee. Some antivirus brands let you opt out of this, but not McAfee.

McAfee's Ransom Guard looks for suspicious file changes and quickly makes copies of targeted files if it suspects a ransomware attack. Advanced Malware Detection can speed the detection and distribution of a defense to the company's subscribers.

McAfee 2021: Antivirus performance

McAfee's malware-detection rates are generally a half-step behind those of rival brands Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton, although they have been improving recently.

In tests conducted by the independent German lab AV-Test in May and June 2020, McAfee's scanner found all known, or "widespread," malware samples thrown at it but detected only 98.8% of the new "zero-day" samples in May. It scored 100% on the June zero-days.

But in the next three bimonthly rounds of tests from July through December 2020, McAfee sailed through with 100% in both categories each time, matching the best. Some other brands that had less-than-perfect results have been getting better as well.

Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Norton, Trend Micro and even Microsoft's Windows Defender had perfect 100% malware-detection scores in all eight months of tests.

Malware detection rates AV-Test zero-day AV-Test widespread AV-Comparatives SE Labs

Sophos100% 100%98.3% 86%
Trend Micro 100% 100%100% 92%

McAfee was a bit short of perfection in Austrian lab AV-Comparatives' most recent tests. It detected an average of 98.5% of online malware in monthly tests from July through October 2020. Among the six other paid antivirus brands were normally review, only Sophos did worse, and that was on the enterprise rather than the consumer tests.

Bitdefender, ESET, Kaspersky, Norton and even Microsoft each scored more than 99%. Trend Micro scored 100% but avast premier 2017 license file till 2050 - Activators Patch up 63 false positives, indicating that its detection engine might be a little too sensitive.

McAfee got perfect scores in the most recent (October-December 2020) test results from U.K.-based SE Labs, matching only Kaspersky. But whereas the latter had perfect scores all year, McAfee fell short in SE Labs' previous 2020 rounds, letting five pieces of malware infect test systems.

Of the other brands in SE Labs' most recent tests that we review, Norton detected everything but was docked points for false positives and neutralizing rather than blocking one piece of malware. Trend Micro let through two pieces of malware, and Sophos a whopping eight.

Bitdefender and ESET were not tested. Microsoft, which we review alongside free antivirus software, let one piece of malware infect a system.

McAfee 2021: Security and privacy features

Each of McAfee's products do the protection basics well but lack features many competitors have. The Identity tab in the McAfee software interface consolidates the program's privacy features, including the file shredder, password manager and Tracker Remover, plus a data shredder with three levels of erasure for getting rid of inconvenient or embarrassing files.

Vulnerability Management looks for old firmware, weak passwords and other potential flaws in your apps and system software. There's also anti-phishing protection and a two-way firewall that replaces the Microsoft one.

McAfee's Home Network Management shows you devices that are connected to your Wi-Fi, identified by IP address. It also can block outsiders trying to burrow into your home LAN. McAfee's App Boost makes programs run faster by reprioritizing system resources, while the Web Boost browser extension for Edge, Chrome and Firefox blocks unrequested downloads.

McAfee Internet Security adds an email filter to stop spam and phishing attempts, while LiveSafe and Total Protection (for five or more devices) add file encryption.

McAfee's True Key password manager comes with Internet Security and all Total Protection and LiveSafe packages. The Safe Connect VPN comes with LiveSafe and the 5-device (or more) versions of Total Protection.

The VPN client software works across all platforms and uses the infrastructure of TunnelBear, a Toronto-based stand-alone VPN service that McAfee owns. It's a good deal considering that a TunnelBear subscription costs $60 a year on its own.

You can connect to servers in two dozen countries. It took 5 seconds for me to connect to a local server in the New York area, although my data speed dropped from 188Mbps to 90Mbps.

Safe Family parental controls come with LiveSafe and the 10-user version of Total Protection. It filters websites based on a child's age and a personal profile, and also limits screen time, locates children's phones and schedules app blocking. On its own, Safe Family costs $50 a year.

McAfee's Identity Theft Protection Essentials (ITPE) monitors the dark Web for your personal information. It comes with LiveSafe and the 5- and 10-device Total Protection packs; the top Ultimate Total Protection plan includes Identity Theft Protection Plus, which will reimburse you up to $1,000,000 for the costs of restoring your identity.

McAfee 2021: Performance and system impact

To measure McAfee Total Protection's impact on system performance, we used our custom benchmark test, which clocks how long it takes to match 20,000 names and addresses on a spreadsheet. Our testbed was a Lenovo ThinkPad T470 with a 2.5-GHz Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 250GB of solid-state storage containing 63GB of files.

Prior to McAfee's installation, our test took an average of 10.1 seconds to finish, which we used as our baseline. After we loaded McAfee Total Protection, that completion time rose to 11.0 seconds, an acceptable background performance decline of 8.9%. Bitdefender Total Security had twice the background impact.

However, the benchmark completion time rose to 19.8 seconds during a McAfee full scan and 14.0 seconds during a quick scan. The former is among the biggest performance penalties we've seen caused by antivirus software, representing a decline of 96% from the baseline and 80% from the post-installation score.

System hit Post-installation Full scan Quick scan
Bitdefender 19% 33% 31%
ESET 2%12% n/a
Kaspersky 12% 26% 22%
McAfee 9% 96% 37%
Norton 5% 51% 22%
Sophos 6% 47% n/a
Trend Micro 4% 57% 35%

To put it another way, the CPU performed about half as fast during a McAfee full scan as before McAfee was installed. By comparison, Bitdefender's full scan slowed the system by about a third, and Kaspersky's by only about a quarter.

McAfee's quick scan was still heavy, but not abnormally so, with performance hits of 39% from the baseline and 27% from the background impact.

Fortunately, McAfee's scans are over quickly. After the initial full scan, during which McAfee Total Protection took an hour to index the entire drive's 366,872 files, subsequent full scans took an average of 4 minutes and 5 seconds, about midway between Kaspersky and Bitdefender.

McAfee's quick scan took 1:33 to look at 7,247 files and stayed at roughly that duration regardless of how many times we ran it.

McAfee 2021: Interface

McAfee's latest interface is more efficient than previous versions, consolidating defenses for PC (Antivirus, Firewall, Secure Apps and App Boost), Web (Browser Security, Web Boost, Tracker Remover and Secure VPN) and Identity (Password Manager, File Shredder and File Lock encryption).

There's no overall appraisal of your security status, as you might see with other antivirus brands, but each major section has useful information. The Settings section has so many options that only one-third of them at a time fit on an HD screen.

Image 1 of 3

McAfee's taskbar icon can update the software, use the VPN, change settings for real-time scanning and the firewall and even connect you to the company's online support website.

McAfee 2021: Installation and support

Installing McAfee Total Protection starts with a trip to the company website or to a third-party retailer. You've got to enter credit-card information or an activation code, then create a McAfee account.

McAfee's auto-renewal policy sets you up to pay for another subscription when the current one expires. It's easy to change this after the software is installed but leaving it on is required to use McAfee's VPN and identity-theft protection features.

The beachhead installer is only 41.2MB, but it downloads the rest of the files needed for the installation process. When the circular progress gauge is finished, the program puts you on the dashboard page, ready to run a scan.

McAfee's tech support crew works with Twitter and Facebook but won't reply to emails. They do offer 24/7 chat and telephone access 24/7, and there's a deep FAQ library. McAfee guarantees your money back if its software can't clean up your system — but, again, only if you don't turn off the subscription auto-renewal.

McAfee 2021 review: Bottom line

From its basic Antivirus through Internet Security to Total Protection and LiveSafe, McAfee's software and services hit most of the hot buttons for the security-conscious, often at a bargain rate considering how many devices can be covered by a single license.

The only major chinks in McAfee's online armor are the lack of a dedicated defense against webcam hijacking or a hardened browser for online commerce, plus the fact that some other brands detect more malware. It's also a bit stinky that the VPN and identity-theft protection won't work if you turn off subscription auto-renewals.

Overall, McAfee's protections are good, but programs from Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Norton provide more complete coverage and better malware detection.

McAfee, like most other modern antivirus programs, doesn’t stay out of your way. It installs browser extensions and shows various alert messages you might not want to see. If McAfee came with your PC, you may regularly see messages that your subscription is expired. Here’s how to get rid of that noise.

The below steps were performed with McAfee LiveSafe, but should be similar with other McAfee editions of McAfee’s antivirus software. To learn more about which antivirus programs we recommend, check out this guide.

Did McAfee Come With Your PC? Consider Uninstalling It

If you’ve installed McAfee because you want to use it, that’s fine. However, many people don’t choose to install McAfee. Instead, many PC mcafee promo - Crack Key For U bundle a time-limited trial version of McAfee on their new PCs.

Antivirus programs used to be simple: They protected your PC from malware, viruses, and suspicious Internet sites, and that was that. But now we’re using multiple devices—often interchangeably—and we’re trusting our data to the cloud.

While this response is not abnormal—after all, antivirus programs act a lot like viruses themselves, digging deep into your PC’s underbelly and accessing root files in order to sniff out malware—LiveSafe’s response was.

The optimization peters out quickly, though: I noticed a few link-heavy menus (such as the Navigation Center).

Facial recognition is fairly simple: You take a photo of yourself on the device you’re using, and Personal Locker compares it to a photo of you it has on file.

QAnon

Clark started looking into the possibility of a planetary beacon as part of a final project for 16.343 (Spacecraft, and Aircraft Sensors and Instrumentation), a course taught by Clark’s advisor, Associate Professor Kerri Cahoy.

Either setup, he estimated, could produce a generally detectable signal from up to 20,000 light-years away.
